Mount Making

All of our mounts are bespoke, designed and fabricated to meet the unique requirements of each specific object.

This could include anything from tiny, fragile ceramic fragments, medieval manuscripts, suits of armour, sporting memorabilia, or large, stone crosses.

From the design process, through to on-site installation, we work closely with our clients to ensure the long-term preservation of the objects, whilst also meeting aesthetic, technical and interpretative requirements.

Materials

Material for mounts is chosen to be visually unobtrusive and inert, so as not to off-gas or react with objects.  Our conservators advise on the suitability of mount design and material and confirm it passes Oddy Testing.

Small object mounts are typically made from brass.  Larger, heavier objects may require a steel mount.  Mounts can be painted and colour matched. We also work with acrylic, providing bespoke mounts for fragile objects, such as books and textiles.

Large & Heavy Objects

We are experienced working with large and heavy objects, such as a 1200kg cast iron ceiling installed in the Stirling Engine Shed and the reconstruction of the 5 metre high Saint Oran’s Cross at Iona Abbey.

Our mounts are designed in consultation with structural engineers and architects to ensure load support and building requirements are met.

We are equipped and trained in working with a range of specialist lifting and access equipment to ensure all objects and mounts are installed safely.

Install & Display

We can provide on site installation of objects, mounts and displays.  Working closely with the design team we ensure all our mounts can be easily fitted to the display case, plinths or building fabric.

With experience handling and transporting all manner of objects, whether extremely delicate pieces, or large and heavy material, we take every precaution to ensure that the objects, cases and building are safely protected.

No matter the scale of the project, we are committed to meeting deadlines, whilst being adaptable to the unique requirements of working in exhibition spaces, museums and historic properties.

Private Collectors

LightlyWest are always interested hearing from private collectors and galleries, even for small projects mounting individual objects.

We often work with alternative materials and finishing techniques to create mounts that are unique and visually distinctive to suit the client’s specific requirements.
